What claim settlement ratio measures

Claim settlement ratio (CSR) is the percentage of claims an insurer paid out of all claims received in a given financial year. An insurer with a 98% CSR settled 98 out of every 100 claims filed — a useful, though not complete, signal of claims reliability.

Where to find this data

In India, insurers are required to disclose their claim settlement ratio annually, and this data is also published in the IRDAI's annual report. It's worth checking the most recent 2–3 years of data rather than relying on a single year, since ratios can fluctuate.

Why a high ratio isn't the full picture

CSR counts claims by number, not by value — an insurer could have a high ratio driven by settling many small claims while contesting fewer, larger ones. It also doesn't capture how long claims take to settle, or how smooth the documentation process was for claimants.

Other factors to weigh alongside it

Look at claim settlement ratio by amount (not just by number) where available, average claim processing time, the insurer's solvency ratio (a measure of financial strength), and independent customer reviews about the actual claims experience. Together, these give a far more reliable picture than CSR alone.
